Assam Fine Arts & Crafts Society

Assam Fine Arts and Crafts Society, started in 1971, is situated at Judges Field, Guwahati, in Assam. The center aims to foster the studies in the field of art, culture and crafts of Assam and neighbouring states. The society revives traditional art and craft techniques and brings out courses on art and related fields.

Assam Fine Arts and Crafts Society offers vocational training for students. The center offers various supports for higher studies in art and crafts. Exhibition, symposia and camps are organized. Besides, the society works as a library-cum-documentation center.

Brief History: It is no unknown fact that the Assam Fine Arts and crafts Society is the first Arts and Crafts institute to be established in North East India. It perhaps is not known to many that it was not only those practicing the fine arts who yearned for the formation of this institution. Poet Navakanta Barua initiated the efforts. So did Chandra Prasad Saikia. Finally, when Sonaram Nath, Neelpawan Barua and team arranged for a formal meeting on 23rd November, 1971. Dr. Birendra Kumar Bhattacharjee was elected President – a post he held till he breathed his last. Litterateur Chandra Prasad Saikia has the distinction of being the first person who donated funds to the Society’s coffers.
